8mm Film Transfer
8mm & Super 8 to DVD, MiniDV (DVC), and/or Hard Drive
Our website allows you to easily generate an order, but first let’s start with a FREE ESTIMATE and we'll see!
To make up your free transfer estimate, please select one of the 4 options below:
What is your transfer process? |
Unlike some other transfer houses, we do NOT project your film’s image onto a secondary image, (such as a silver-screen or matt glass) but rather it goes straight onto our high-end 3CCD chip industrial camera. This direct method is most important in achieving a crisp and sharp image.
Naturally, our transfers are flicker free! And ... read more about our transfer process

What are your buisness hours? |
We do all of our business by mail only.
We don't have an office open to the public. Nearly all of our customers mail in their films, but for those who live more local, you have another option. You may drop off your film at our local, Bennett Valley, UPS Store. We have a special arrangement there and always receive excellent service from them: The UPS Store, 2777 Yulupa Avenue, Santa Rosa. Open Monday –Saturday - (707) 546-1565 Dillon, Geoff and Russell.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Your package must be sealed and addressed just as if you were mailing it to us – and you will need to let them know to: "Please charge FilmFix for this package." It’s free for you!

How can I find out what kind of film I have? |
Recognizing the difference between Super-8 and Normal-8
Normal 8 film has larger perforations at the edges of the film than does Super-8 film. In Normal 8, the holes are almost square. In Super-8, the holes are elongated and narrow. The film spools are also different. In Normal 8, the center hole of the film spool is smaller than the center hole of the Super-8 spool. In Normal-8, the center hole measures approximately 8 mm. In Super-8, it measures approximately 13 mm.

Do you do PAL transfers? |
Yes. In addition to the standard U.S. format of NTSC, we also transfer to true PAL format. True PAL is not just an NTSC transfer blown-up to PAL!
There is an additional set-up fee of $30.00 on PAL transfers.
What is the best way to ship my film to you? |
We have enjoyed a 100% track record of perfectly delivered packages using the Postal Service.
We send all our domestic shipments via the U.S. Postal Service using their "Priority Mail - with a Delivery Confirmation". If you prefer, and let us know, and we can use a "Signature Confirmation" instead.
Both methods provide you with a tracking number with which you will be able to track your shipment.
UPS, FedEx, DHL and other carriers also work. However, we only send back your goods via the U.S. Postal Service. (Note our Policy -- We return your order in 2 separate shipments. First we send your transferred goods. Then 7 – 10 days later, we send your original goods back to you.)
What is the turnaround time on your orders? |
It’s easy to find out. From this page, you are 1 or 2 clicks away from seeing your "Estimated Completion Date." As soon as you finish your free online Estimate, it shows you the ESTIMATED completion date. Sometimes we beat that date but if, for any reason, we find we might go over by a day or two, we will surely notify you (that’s rare.)
NOTE: Our turn-around time varies based on how much work we already have "in-house" at the time your order is placed.
What if I am wrong in calculating my Estimate? |
We base our invoice on the total minutes of your transferred footage. For slides it is bases on the actual number of slides. Therefore, it is only after the transfer is completed that we will know what the total cost of your order is. We then notify you via an email, and you can pay for it then.
If you have under-estimated your total footage (or slides), your invoice will be a bit more, and if you over-estimated, then the cost will be a bit less. Both cases happen sometimes, and it’s OK.

Do you perform all the work yourselves? Do you outsource any of it? |
We perform all of the work in-house here in Santa Rosa, CA.
All aspects of your transfer are done by Nathaniel - a professionally trained filmmaker and photographer.
Does FilmFix process “undeveloped” film? |
No – so we can only transfer film that has already been processed.
If your film has not already been processed, please do so before mailing it to FilmFix. (Disappointingly, we have had to return 3 orders which were not transferable!)
To our knowledge, there are only a few places that will still process 8mm and Super-8 film. Here are some links of places we think could help you. It would be wise to call them first:

Do you add music to your transfers? |
Out of respect to Copyright laws and the great variety of personal taste in music, we do not add music to any of our transfers.
 Do you transfer sound? |
Yes – if your film has any sound on it, the sound will get transferred along with your image.
(Our price includeds the cost of sound transfer.)

I have between 1 and 12 reels of film and want them transferred to DVD - with photo & text menu titles like I see here.
This process is a little more involved - but we think it is worth it! It will give you an even more accurate estimate and yields a more succinct and simplified order. |
